I-131 Treatment for Hyperthyroid Cats
We Offer I-131 Radioactive Iodine Therapy to Cure Hyperthyroidism in Cats
Hyperthyroidism is a relatively common condition in cats, especially senior cats. The condition involves increased thyroid hormone production and is often caused by benign tumors although, in rare circumstances, hyperthyroidism can be caused by cancerous growths. However, 98% of the time, the abnormal thyroid tissue is due to a benign tumor.
If your cat is showing symptoms of hyperthyroidism—such as increased appetite/thirst, weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea, or matted/unkempt fur—you may want to consider I-131 radioactive iodine therapy treatment. Quakertown Veterinary Clinic offers I-131 treatment for hyperthyroid cats.

Additional Information
The I-131 radioactive iodine therapy treatment is a single injection of radioiodine (I-131) that can cure feline hyperthyroidism without any adverse side effects.
Clients who are interested in I-131 treatment for their cat will need some lab work performed prior to the treatment. Their cat will need a CBC, chemistry, T4, and free T4. If you are coming to our facility from an outside veterinary hospital, we will need a copy of your pet’s records.
Your feline will stay in the hospital for 96 hours post-injection. There is no visitation permitted during those 96 hours for the safety of the owner.
Each owner will be responsible for following an in-home protocol for the duration of two weeks. This will include keeping your cat separate from other cats in the home and wearing gloves while cleaning the litter pan. We will go over all post-treatment instructions with you before the treatment takes place.
This treatment offers a number of benefits, primarily that it can cure hyperthyroidism in your cat and improve their overall health, comfort, and happiness.
Additional benefits of I-131 radioactive iodine therapy treatment include:
- No side effects
- Single subcutaneous injection
- Renal hypertension and proteinuria resolve
- Stops progression of renal disease
- Longest survival rates
- One-time expense (less expensive than long-term use of medication or the Y/D diet)
